How our Catholic Bible came to be.
The books of the Old Testament came to Catholicism from our Jewish origins. However, the books and letters of the New Testament were written in a period of about sixty years, from about 50 A.D. through the end of the first century.
As the Church grew, various writings sprung up and doctrinal controversies spread throughout the early Church. An authoritative listing of writings was needed. Church councils were convened and an accepted collection of Old and New Testament books and letters became known as the “canon”. By the early second century, the “canon” of the Bible was finalized in the West and used by A.D. 390, and a little later in the East. In the 4th Century, St. Jerome translated the Old Testament from the original Hebrew into Latin and the New Testament from Greek to Latin. This was called “The Vulgate” and served as the authoritative translation of the Church. By the end of the Fourth Century, various Councils had solidified the books of the Bible, and it was “sanctioned” by the Pope at the beginning of the 5th Century.
However, the canon (Bible) was not officially approved by a council of bishops until the Council of Trent in the 16th Century. The “approved” Catholic Bible of today is the New American Bible, based on direct translations from Hebrew and Greek.
